Weird Coincidence #4

Weird coincidences keep happening to me. My buddy, who is a math teacher, says it is all just the mathematical odds playing out.

I’m not always so sure.

Do you think the universe reveals things to us serendipitously, or are the things that happen to us just due to mathematical chance?

Parabellums.

Not a very common word. The only time I ever heard of that word was in a series of dimestore novels my brother turned me onto: Mack Bolan.

Mack Bolan, aka The Executioner, was a mercenary for hire. Over 600 novels were written about this character. I was only a kid when I read them, but I remembered one of the author’s favourite words: parabellums.

It’s the term for a type of 9mm cartridge. A bullet.

On April 24th I wrote a poem called Parabellums. I wanted to use an obscure word for bullets. So I used my Mack Bolan memories. The poem is kind of about literary bullets from one’s mind hitting the page.

Now here’s the weird coincidence:. I just sat down to watch the Blue Jays game, and at the first commercial break, a trailer for John Wick 3 came on.

Guess what it’s called?

John Wick 3: Parabellums

Coincidence? It’s hard to imagine.

  1. That is the most maddening kind of coincidence: ideas in the air!
You get an idea, you think it’s pretty original, and then, right before you can do anything with it, someone else comes up with it independently. It’s every creator’s worst nightmare.
As for me, I had no idea what a parabellum was. When I first saw the word in your post, I thought it was the plural of parabola.
