Weird Coincidence #7

Weird coincidences keep happening to me. My buddy, who is a math teacher, says it is all just the mathematical odds playing out.

I’m not always so sure.

Do you think the universe reveals things to us serendipitously, or are the things that happen to us just due to mathematical chance?

This Sunday we were supposed to head home from the cottage, but our guests stayed late and we elected to stay one more night and make an early departure the next morning.

That afternoon we had listened to the Blue Jays game on the radio. They were playing the San Diego Padres, which is slightly uncommon because the two teams are in different leagues.

In the evening after our guests left and the kids were in bed, my wife and I perused the mish mash of a VHS/DVD collection at the cottage. We decided on the Brad Pitt/Robert Redford flick, “Spy Game”.

Guess where Brad Pitt’s character, Tom Bishop, hails from in the movie?

You guessed it: San Diego

As if to further emphasize the coincidence, look what he is wearing for a good portion of the film:

Interestingly enough, the scene pictured above takes place in 1985 and that style of Padres hat was not available until the 1990s.

What a strange coincidence…

    1. Great movie, I agree.
My math teacher friend would agree with you that the coincidence is just that, a coincidence and not weird at all.

I still find it strange as a Toronto fan. Toronto only plays San Diego 3 times out of 162 games. One of those games happened to be on that Sunday that we happened to watch the Spy Game DVD.

I wouldn’t have found it weird if it was a Detroit, New York, or Baltimore hat.
